  • A reinvention of the traditional hip flask.

The classic hip flask is iconic – worth its weight in gold (or bourbon). The usual shape is rectangular, with a small spout, but we believed we could create a flask that celebrates its contents in a more user-friendly, enjoyable, easy to clean and durable way. The result is the Wingback 100ml Hip. With a seamless, cylindrical design it is reassuringly robust, resilient and adventure ready. Every flask can be personalised with a laser engraved inscription on the removable base, which also doubles as a handy bottle opener. At a 100ml capacity, it’s the ultimate travel companion, designed to serve you on any journey as well it does at home.

  • Metal: Aerospace grade 316 stainless steel from Europe, CNC machined in Birmingham, UK.

Outside surface: Tungsten carbide carbon finish applied in Cambridge, UK.

Pouch: Oeko-Tex double thickness cotton from Poland, Europe.

Finish: Laser engraved, assembled by hand and packaged in London, UK.

  • Dimensions: 37mm (1.47”) diameter, 127mm (5.00”) length, 180g (6.35 oz) weight

    Capacity: 100ml / 3.4 fl.oz - lid doubles as convenient 12.5ml half measure

Engraving: Personalise your flask with an inscription of up to 50 characters on the base. Unpersonalised flasks come with the inscription "For Your Journey".

Considerations: The Black Steel flask retains all the precision and corrosion-resistant qualities of our stainless steel version, while the tungsten carbide finish increases the surface hardness 9x. Any marks it picks up from regular use should be easily wiped away. However, the surface is scratch resistant, not scratch proof. Anything harder than the surface (diamond, some ceramics) or really aggressive use will be able to scratch it. which is why we recommend keeping it in its cotton sleeve when not in use, and carrying your diamonds in another pocket. Internally, 316 stainless steel is food and dishwasher safe and won’t alter the flavour of its contents. Before first use, give it a good wash then fill it to the brim with your favourite tonic.

"There are plenty of black metal pens out there. But I’m not sure how many can boast the durability of a tungsten carbide finish."

A statement piece

The pandemic has made it impossible to meet up with friends for camping/hiking trips, but we still videocall when we’re out on walks. Every time I take a sip from the hip flask someone notices. The black steel makes it both practical and tool-like, but also elegant without being pretentious. Goes great with a Barbour jacket and a pair of muddy boots!

Beautiful and practical

This has to be one of the most beautiful "simple" objects I use. I love the Wingback philosophy of simple objects that you use forever that can be passed down the generations. I have the original stainless steel version, this one looks like something out of the Star Wars universe.

form factor is great at that size...but it isn't really scratch proof

The tungsten carbide finish is great, but the flask came delivered with some scratch marks out of the box.

Furthermore, when I tried using a razor blade to test the coating, it is NOT scratch proof at all.
Even if I tried wiping that area again and again, the scratch mark is still there. Thus, my conclusion is the coating is good but NOT really scratch proof.
Need to be careful with it when in use too.

Hi Fu, Thanks for the feedback. Your flask certainly should not have turned up with any scratches on it, these are likely unpolished marks under the surface coating. Regarding scratching with a razor, the surface is highly scratch resistant, rather than totally scratch proof so it will be possible to leave a mark if you really try.
Could you send over an email with your order number and we'll get something sorted for you.
Many thanks, Alasdair

Whats not to like?

Appearance, form, fit, function, finish are all exceptional, a truly wonderful item that does everything you would wish of it, pleasing to the eye and practical.

A perfect example of form following function. The flask itself is beautifully machined and feels great to hold. It fits very easily into a coat pocket or a bag (in that respect it's far more convenient than a traditional hip flask). And the black steel makes it both classy, inconspicuous and adds a very pleasant tactile sensation.
