Wingback products are designed for any journey, from commutes through the capital to adventures along the Jurassic Coast. Here we lift the lid on our favourite travel companion, the 100ml Hip Flask.

At Wingback, we enjoy the odd single malt. We’re rather partial to a Kentucky bourbon and would rarely say no to a smoky mezcal either.

But, back in 2019, we felt somewhat underserved by the range of drinking flasks out there – so set our sights on putting the world to rights by reinventing the traditional hip flask.

 Why tamper with a gentleman’s most trusted companion, you ask? Because we believed we could create a flask that celebrates its contents in a more user-friendly, easy to clean and enjoyable way.

 

Reinvention, not revolution

The hip flask’s classic rectangular shape and small spout hit popularity in prohibition but time has moved on since then – and so have manufacturing techniques.

Standard flasks are about as seaworthy as a leaky boat. They’re typically made from sheets of metal that are then formed and soldered together. This leaves weak points that can split, meaning you end up wringing out your jacket just to get a taste.

They are also incredibly difficult to fill (even with a funnel). Their contents glugs out whenever you take a sip, and are basically impossible to clean.

To address these nagging functionality issues, we eliminated the seams by opting for an unbroken cylindrical body. This allows for a wide mouth for easy (funnel-free) filling, pouring and sipping.

The new shape meant we could include a removable base for effortless cleaning and, as a little bonus, we added a discreet bottle opener on the base.

The bottom of the flask could also be personalised with a laser-engraved inscription. The best we've seen so far: “I drink to make other people more interesting”. Hemingway was ever the charmer.

The flask’s 316 stainless steel is food and dishwasher safe so it won’t alter the flavour of its contents. It’s also virtually indestructible. It will withstand almost anything you can throw at it without losing a shade of its original glory. 

Before first use, we advise giving it a good wash, before filling it to the brim with your favourite tonic, and putting it to the test wherever your next adventure takes you.
