Projects: Hip Flask
***
We originally launched the 100ml Hip, our redesign of the traditional hip flask, on Kickstarter here. The flask is now available to buy with customisable inscriptions here. If you already backed us please leave your reviews there or read on to see where the inspiration for the 100ml Hip came from.

The Wingback Hip Flask Project
Fit For Function
Spillage
Hip flasks have such a small mouth that even the most steady handed drinker can wind up dousing themselves in highly flammable spirits when filling them up. A common fix is to use a funnel, but that’s neither practical nor pocket friendly when you’re on the move.
Cleaning
The next problem is cleaning. Short of sawing it in half, then soldering it back together, your old hip flask probably hasn’t had a good clean since it was built. You’ve been drinking dregs since your first sip, old boy.
Materials
In the good old days hip flasks were made from silver or pewter, a mix of predominantly tin plus copper, antimony, bismuth and sometimes lead (be careful if you're still swigging from your grandfather’s hand-me-down). Ignoring the inherent values of the metals, their relative softness means they can be easily bent out of shape.
Manufacturing
ONE FOR THE ROAD
A large lid and screw removable base makes filling and pouring mess-free and every nook and cranny can be comprehensively cleaned. The food-safe seals and stainless steel material have a high resistance to acids, alkalis and chlorides and all parts are dishwasher friendly.
At a capacity of 100ml and weighing in at 180g, our flask is large enough to share a sip between friends but small enough to carry on your whole journey. And as a little bonus, we added a discreet lip detail on the base of the flask that serves as a handy bottle cap opener when you need to crack open a beer (boilermaker, anyone?)*.
The finished product is a robust, pleasingly weighty, cylindrical hip flask that would serve you exceptionally well on any journey.
*Our favourite recipe for this whisky-beer combo: straight Rittenhouse Rye whisky, with a chaser of Innis & Gunn barrel aged beer. Cheers!

“Bottoms up” you guys seriously ROCK… beautifully machined, it’s sure to turn heads!! Can’t wait until tomorrow…what time is the launch?
Kelly
Perfect! Please also make a titanium version.
Nouri
Great idea guys! Love my key cache!
Greg Gin

Valentin
It’s freaking awesome…I can’t wait to jump on your campaign….good luck

Love it, I need this in my life
Iain
Oval! Make it oval!!!
Tim
Hmmm the classic hip flask has that nice curve, which sits flat against the body… perfect. I think the cylinder would feel more bulky. It’s a big lump that would be clanking about in a jacket pocket and it would stretch out a trouser pocket and cause a void around it. It is too “thick” and I’d want to put that in my bag not my trouser pocket. No good for a quick nip on the ski lift!!
Tim
Looks excellent. Bring it on!😊

I am a huge fan of your brand and products – love the concept of the hip flask – why not also do a larger version for everyday water / coffee……?
Rob
Another fantastic design concept from Wingback. When can I get one …. ?
Andrew
Looks compact and well made. Ideal for the rugby stand or hill walking. Also like the idea of the bottle cap opener. Very useful that you can clean it easily in a dishwasher. Let me know when it’s for sale as interested.

Love it! Take my 💷
What colours will it come in?
Dmitry Brown
Yes, please. I need this in my life ASAP. Thanks.

I am a huge fan of this design. While I understand the historic shape and form of a hipflask this has a very modern feel to it. If the key cache (which this is completely inline with in terms of style) is anything to go by then this will be of the excellent quality we’ve come to expect from Wingback. I’ll certainly be looking to back this – the black anodised looks particularly great.
More of the same please!
Dave Higgins
How do I order one?
Tim
Hey guys, why not have titanium either fully or on the inside where the spirit comes in contact with the flask?
Alok
Absolutely love it. I have a few flasks and recently bought a Barbour round flask encased in cognac leather which is an idea with your expertise in leather. Love my cash wallet by the way. Keep up the great design. Eager to see a cost. Regards Steve.
