Brass Care - General
Brass is a beautiful metal which, if untreated as all of our brass is, will develop a rich patina with the passage of time. Whether you want to keep your brass looking like new or aged is up to you.
Want to allow your brass product to develop a patina? You don't need to do anything other than enjoy using it.
To restore your brass to a clean state, follow this guide.
How to Clean Brass
What you need:
- Small container of water (e.g. tupperware)
- Toothbrush
- Cloth
- Brasso
Cleaning steps:
- Pour a small amount of brasso onto your cloth.
- For the Mechanical Pen and the Journeyman Pen, turn the crown anticlockwise to unscrew and remove. Take out the cartridge and place to one side.
- For Mechanical Pencils, hold the tip firmly with one hand and turn the barrel anticlockwise to unscrew and remove.
- For Fountain Pens there’s no need to remove the cap - keep it capped.
- Place the barrel in the cloth and rotate the barrel whilst applying pressure to the cloth and wipe up and down the full length of the barrel and tip. A dark substance should begin to form on the cloth as the brasso works.
- Do this also for the tip of the Pencil if cleaning this.
- To clean the knurling, grab a toothbrush and dip it into the brasso so that there’s a good amount on the bristles. Brush the knurling firmly. Wipe down with cloth after to remove any pooled black substance.
- Place the barrel and crown (if cleaning a Mechanical Pen or Journeyman Pen) in the water container and shake them around to remove any residue.
- Remove and give one final wipe clean with a clean part of your cloth.
- Leave out to dry completely.
- Reassemble your pen/pencil and admire.
