The Black Steel version is finished with an ultra hard, scratch resistant 4µm tungsten carbide layer which is 9x harder than stainless steel, and usually reserved for high performance cutting tools.

I’ve had my Wingback mechanical pencil for a few years now - this is actually my second as I’d lost my previous and couldn’t bear to be without it (as well as Wingback’s fountain pen). It’s a little source of inspiration in itself - every time I pick it up I’m reminded of the value and pleasure of good design, so it calibrates my thoughts and hopefully flows into my own creative practice. Oh and I since found my thought to be lost pen and pencil so my wife has been the grateful beneficiary of my absent mindedness!

Got the Steel pencil as a present. Never really worked, got in touch with Wingback at the time and shipped me a replacement part with the exact same problem. Was using Staedtler standard graphite that works in my Rotring and Staedtler pencils so couldn't be that. Nice looking paperweight though.
