Built to last a lifetime, our Mechanical Pen is machine turned from aerospace-grade stainless steel and finished with an ultra-hard black tungsten carbide engineering surface coating. It features a unique smooth twist-lock mechanism, our signature knurled grip and accommodates widely available Fisher Space Pen refills for a smooth, consistent writing experience.

Metal: Aerospace-grade 303 stainless steel from Europe, CNC machined in Birmingham, UK. Tungsten carbide carbon finish applied in Cambridge, UK.

Cartridge: Fisher Space Pen® PR4 Pressurised ink cartridge from Boulder City, US.

Packaging: Waxed cotton sleeve from Halley Stevensons in Scotland + a cork pen rest from Portugal.

Finish: Laser engraved, assembled by hand and packaged in London, UK.

Considerations: The Black Steel pen retains all the precision and corrosion-resistant qualities of stainless steel, while the tungsten carbide finish increases the surface hardness 9x. Any marks it picks up from regular use should be easily wiped away. However, the surface is scratch resistant, not scratch proof. Anything harder than the surface (diamond, some ceramics) or really aggressive use will be able to scratch it, which is why we recommend keeping it in its cotton sleeve when not in use, and carrying your diamonds in another pocket.

Proper quality

I dithered for several months due to the cost, which IS quite high, but finally I weakened and I'm glad I did. The pen looks and feels like a quality piece of engineering - I love the way the mechanism moves when you twist it to open the pen. Also the refills are excellent quality - I have had disappointments in the past when I've bought very expensive pens and the refills have been mediocre quality (eg pens with the initials MB named after a French mountain!)

Such a great, timeless gift

I've purchased a few pens from Wingback now and these always hit as a gift. The pen's got such a nice weight to it and the inscriptions always add an amazing touch. I've got to get myself one at some point!

A beautifully designed and crafted pen

I bought this as a present for my Dads 80th; but had a look before I wrapped it up and it is a superb piece of design and craft that feels pleasingly weighty in the hand, the nib mechanism is solid and clicks very satisfyingly, and it the details are terrific.

My Dad loved it too.

Also a note on customer service, they were utterly brilliant.
