Description

Special edition. Limited to 25 pieces. Allow 1-2 weeks for delivery.

A special edition of our Red Dot award-winning Mechanical Pencil by Lást Maps carries 10x more lead than alternatives in its all metal custom designed mechanism. Its ergonomic wide diameter and knurled grip help reduce hand fatigue while creating.

Machined in England from a solid block of brass, stainless steel or ceramic coated brass, each item is crafted with precision and built to last. Over time, the brass version will develop a rich, patina that tells the story of its journey, making every piece unique and full of character. The hard steel and abrasion resistant ceramic coated British Racing Green pieces will remain maintenance free with marks of their journey much harder to come by.

The artwork for this piece comes from the Lást Maps studio:

“Inspired by hand cartography, “World Explorer” is a unique contemporary yet timeless map of the world, celebrating the meeting of old and new to inspire your next adventure, whether on the page or on travels around the Globe.”

Black Mechanical Pencil - Exquisite

The design, engineering, quality and balance of this pencil is really something very special. It looks stunning (I have the 0.7mm black version) but more importantly it feels so balanced and natural in your hand when using it. I can definitely thoroughly recommend it and now can’t wait for the arrival of the black Journeyman Pen I have on order.
A special “shout out” for Megan who went above and beyond for her customer service.

Not Just a Pencil

I’m older in life now (50) and I think more and more about what I will leave behind. What objects my kids will hold onto, what memories they will have. The Wingback is something that I think about in this context. I think about my son writing with it when I have passed on, seeing my name on the pen, and the patina that is uniquely mine. I own many high priced mechanical pencils and the Wingback writes as well as the others. But you don’t buy a pencil just to write with it. The pencil stays with you as the story of your life is written.

it is just perfect

From the material, to the finish, to the quality and precision, everything is perfect. I have been looking for the fully metal and perfect mechanical pencil, finally I have found it. The width and length are enough for what I was looking for. On the picture you can see it next to one of my favorites fountain pen

Thank you for the wonderful feedback!

Thrilled to hear that our Mechanical Pencil met all your expectations in terms of material, finish, quality, and precision.

Thanks for the lovely review and for sharing your experience with us, happy writing!

EXCEPTIONAL!!!

As a portrait artist I am always looking for quality mechanical pencils. Very few meet my expectations. Ordered my Wingback a few weeks ago and it is an absolute dream! Heirloom quality! 10 out of 10 recommend!! Well done! 👏👏👏

Brass Mechanical Pencil 0.7mm

I enjoy well designed, robust tools that work perfectly and last forever. Personally, I feel there’s a value in that which can take an everyday activity (like writing & drawing) to a higher and more enjoyable level. I’m very happy with my brass mechanical pencil. The brass dulls quickly, which I like, and it’s very smooth to use. Solid weight and stable. I opted for engraving my name on it too, and I’m glad I did - It’s quite small and low-key, just right. Thanks Wingback!

Just exceptional quality.

Everything about the pencil is just a joy. Super weight, solid, smooth to use, exceptional finish. It’s not just a pencil; it’s a statement of who you are and what you value - quality, someone who makes an investment rather than just consuming, someone who has pride in what they use to communicate with (and by extension; the gratitude and value you place on those who choose to read what you write - there is no bigger compliment you can pay someone that to show you’ve put effort into how to reach them). It’s something you’re proud to own and use. I paired the pencil with a leather Moleskine cover…quality just as good.

37 tasty grams

It's hard to get mechanical pencils that weigh around forty grams, yet that weight (if distributed nicely) is very good for a lot of people's handwriting. For example, mine.

I also VERY much appreciate the absence of a clip. It is my considered opinion that every serious pencil maker should banish all thought of clips. They get in the way when you're rotating the pencil as you write.

Downsides of the Wingback: (1) costs twice what I would have liked to pay, and (2) if you drop it, you're certain to wreck the tip.

Luckily, I never drop anything.

Small, heavy and sturdy product !

Before I received this product, I was worried that the pen would be too big or too heavy, but I liked it because it was the right size for my hand, the sophisticated and luxurious design, and the evenly discharged lead and weight balance. great!

Mechanical Pencil - Steel and Holder

The pencil is perfect so it's a bit difficult to discuss faults. I disagree with those that say it could do with a pocket clip as that would damage the image and adversely affect the holding of the pencil in the hand. You could consider a small improvement in the holder by drilling the hole to be the same shape as the pencil including the lead being out. That way you can put the pencil away without having to retract the lead and it would still sit snug in the holder.

Hi Pietro, Thanks for taking the time to leave a review, really glad you're enjoying the Mechanical Pencil. That's an excellent suggestion for the stand, I'll try to work it into the next design iteration. There's not quite enough space at the bottom to drill an additional hole in the current design, but I think a small tweak to the main bore hole should add the lead out feature fairly easily. Cheers, Alasdair

Great Product, shame about Brexit

Wonderful product! I really enjoy it, each and every time I pick it up. It feels like quality, ageless elegance and beauty. But getting it was harder than it should have been. I would strongly recommend you investigate establishing regional fulfilment organisations, for example within the EU. Just a thought.

Hi Robin, Thanks for taking the time to leave a review and for the photo. I'm really glad you like the pencil. To be honest leaving the EU has been a bit of a pain. We're a bit small to open up a European branch of the business at the moment, but are working on some other fulfillment options that will make the process easier. Thanks for sticking with us and hope the pencil is worth any inconvenience of getting it over to you!
Many thanks, Alasdair

Clip on

I bought two black steels.
One is for collection and the other is for thorough use.
First, the surface strength of black steel is the strongest.
I feel that the surface treatment adopted is a great success.
I like remodeling. What would happen if I put a clip on this pencil?
I found a suitable clip, so I attached it to the pencil.

A professional grade tool

I've had love for mechanical pencils for the last 40 years.
Being an award winning art director/graphic designer and illustrator I believe pencil and paper should always come first, even though the final creation is inevitably digital. Unless I lose this one, I'll never have to buy a pencil again.

Design flaw and too expensive ultimately

I have ordered a black steel pencil and I give it a two star rating for the following two reasons:
1. While the pencil is beautifully done, including the inscription, the small steel bit, which holds the polymer lead and which comes out when writing, does not fully submerge back into the pencil when not in use. It still sticks out a fraction of a millimetre. Not sure this is intended but at this price point, it lacks detail for me

2. I ordered the pencil through the wingback European website and paid in Euros (to be shipped to Continental Europe). The pencil and all other items costs €234. I was very surprised that I had to pay an additional EUR63 for duty and customs. This was not clear to me when ordering (although as was pointed out to me later, this information was mentioned in the ’shipping information’), especially as the option was to pay in EUR, rather than GBP. I was under the (false) assumption, that the price quoted in EUR is the final price I have to pay. Given Brexit, I should have know better. I did mentioned this to the company and I got a prompt answer and I was offered a voucher to for my next purchase. This is nice, but a bit pointless as I have to pay duty again….
Unfortunately, not worth it for me.

Hi,
I'm very sorry to hear that you're not happy with your pencil, the design means the retractable tip moves freely and should retract completely up to the surface of the mechanism. When retracting the tip, please could you try to press it in using a fingernail or surface of a table. If this does not work then it would suggest a problem with the mechanism which we can fix or replace for you. Please just reply to your order confirmation email and we'll help out.
Regarding the customs fees, we're trying to be as clear as possible in displaying to international customers that they may need to pay import fees. We even link through to a useful resource to help you work out if you will need to. The U.K. leaving the European Union has not been easy for small businesses, we don't profit at all from these fees and we'd rather not have to deal with the paperwork or lost customers because of it, but unfortunately it is unavoidable at the moment.
Kind regards, Alasdair

Outstanding mechanical pencil

I don't buy much these days — but when I do I go for quality. This pencil ticks all the boxes. It looks impressive, feels great and writes perfectly. It's also developing a lovely patina through use. Top marks.

Immaculate balanced delightful pencil

The length is unusual but fits perfectly into my hand providing a perfect balance that is a joy to use.
The quality of manufacture exemplary. This is a robust, beautifully presented and very well designed instrument.
I can reassure prospective purchasers that this investment will provide great satisfaction.

Beautiful Pencil for life

I recently received this pencil as a present, and I already know I'm going to keep it for life.

Starting with the exterior, I love the brass finish. It catches light well - not overly shiny, not too dull - and the colour itself is fantastic. I also appreciate that the colour will change over time due to material oxidation, enabling me to "make my mark" on the pencil (as well as the personal inscription, which has been machined in really well!). Furthermore, machining in horizontal grooves for grip is much appreciated. As a result, the pencil doesn't feel slippery in the hand at whichever point I hold it. I personally tend to hold the pencil close to the nib and have had no issues.

When holding the pencil, it has a great weight to it and I'm really happy that the nib retracts. I've lost a pencil in the past to this! And when writing the lead is kept stable, so no issues there.

Finally, the mechanism is a joy. It's great that you can strip down the whole pencil and it is immediately apparent a lot of time and effort has gone into making it. Wingback's online guides are also very clear about how to refill the pencil, how to strip it down and how to maintain it. So kudos to Wingback's CX team, considering the whole customer journey.

Overall, I'm very happy and looking forward to many years with my Wingback pencil! Thank you.
